Quick Silver

April 13, 2009

We’d  found a new type of bridge. It was similar to the Golden Gate Bridge, except white instead of red and it zigzagged it’s way across a giant water way in Japan. I had an arial view of the bridge, and he was talking to me from a loud speaker only I could hear, “You don’t recognize this bridge, baby?”

“No, I’ve never seen anything like it.” I responded, in a flat yet curious tone.

“We’re in Tokyo, baby.”

I came down and met him in front of a big carnival that was going on. We stood under the ferris wheel and each did a 360 in wonder of the city and people around us. It was day time, and the lights of the carnival beat down on us like a thousand suns. There were people everywhere, bumping into each other, tripping each other, cutting lines to the rides with each other. You could  hear their chatter and distinct carnival noises drowning out the bustle. We walked, him slightly behind me, towards a beautiful pond, trying to leave the chaos behind. The pond was covered in lily pads and pink flowers. It was silver, with water like mercury. I dipped my toe in and watched it disappear only giving back the relfection of what was on the outside of the pond. This excited me. I dropped his hand and jumped in, my head going all the way under.

“Baby, I can’t see you in the water! Where are you? I can only see my reflection!” He shouted at me, a tiny bit of fear sneaking out in his voice.

I poked my head up, the mercury-like water beading up on my forehead and dripping down the sides of my cheeks.

“Baby, don’t go under like that. I can only see myself.”

I stared back at him, my eyes squinting out tears of silver water.

“It’s not so bad…”I said back, as I  gracefully moved my arms back and forth, gliding so easily through the silky water. I moved further and further out, my eyes beginning to wander from his, noticing the green lily pads a little frogs resting on them. I dipped my head under again and gave a strong kick with my legs, mimicking the little frogs.

“Baby, don’t go under like that! I can only see my reflection!”
